My Choice of Major

My Choice of Major
Two meetings that introduced majors having been hold, it is the time for us to reflect upon the major we are fond of, which will determine our way towards future at some extent.
I still remember the conflict between my family and me, which was caused by our difference opinions on my choosing major. I was deeply attracted by the beauty of math. Math can grasp the nature of complex things, giving the clearest solution; math can form the perfect structure of logic, developing one’s ability of thinking; math can express the pure attraction of pictures, which were shown by both formula and shape.
However, the realistic society never gives that many opportunities to the person who is too idealistic. Taking my future into account, our family persuaded me of abandon my dream of becoming a math scientist. They told me that I would not lead a comfortable life if I take math as my career. Buried with numbers and pictures, I can never have a free minute. What’s worse, I will be likely not to find a suitable job after graduation. Even if I could find a job, the salary will be rather low.
After thinking over for days and nights, I made a concession. I comforted myself with the thought that I can do research on math in my spare time.
Now, the similar time comes for we SM3 students choosing our major in April. However, my mind changes this time, which happened after I read an essay. The writer says, “I only regard the writers who do not live relying on writing as real writers, because the other kind of writers will create ‘writing rubbish’ under the pressure of living. ”
Thinking it over, I agree on it much. For me, if I just take math as a kind of entertainment in my spare time, I will enjoy it. However, if I have to support myself with my knowledge of math, I may never have the special feeling on math.
So I told myself I would choose a major which can give a comfortable circumstance, in which I can do my math research freely.
Those are my thoughts on choosing a major. I hope it can help somebody like me.

  2. YOU can think like this, if you choose a major you do not really like ,you may cannot get a high mark because you use your time which supposed to learn your major curriculums to do your research on your math, the result is you lose both what you are leaning and you want to learn. Thick it twice.

  4. Ziyi, I'm glad that you have come to a decision in regards to your choice of a major. I would like to encourage you that although you have decided that Mathematics may not be a part of your career, the major you embark on should be one that you are interested in. Although it may not be your 'first love' (which is Mathtematics), the major you choose should not be a subject you dislike and are forced to do. Remember, you have to endure four years of study and many more years in a career related to your major!
