Growth in Volunteer Enterprise

Growth in Volunteer Enterprise During the past recess week, there were so many activities I have joined that I decided to choose one of the most interesting experiences. As the title mentioned, it is the GIVE program. Luckily I was chosen to teach pencil sketching in River Valley Primary School. Last Friday, for the first time I was considered to be a teacher and I stood in front of 16 students. It is also the first time that I got up at 6:30 when the sky was still dark. I, together with my friend was so sleepy that we got on the wrong bus in the wrong bus stop.as a result, it took us about an hour to reach the destination and both of us were late. When I arrived at the art classroom, I was surprised to find the teacher was playing music in the room while students were painting. In addition, what also shocked me was that big classroom, which in china can be full of students. The kids can choose their own seats. What is more astonishing is that the teacher let the children draw abstract pictures. In fact, abstract is a theme which many famous artists cannot figure out. He should make grade six students to paint!! Later on, I talked with that teacher and got to know more. Magically, he is a very intelligent teacher who had studied and lived in San Francisco for many years. His learning style is very different from other teachers. However, I approved of his idea about playing music in order to inspire the children. Anther segment is when the teacher introduced me to the class and said my name is yummy, the children are all laughing. Desmond, the teacher said he would let me myself decide what to teach. The only shortcoming is why Singaporean students have to get up so early. Anyway, I’m still expecting the next Friday’s teaching.

  2. Hi Yummy, I can tell that it was a good experience. Did you get to teach the class pencil sketching in the end? I hope you weren't too late for that.
