My host family

My host family

22th, Jan 2011 Saturday

Today we meet our host families in NUS. We four have an uncle named Ng chin Ann. He is a heavy taxi driver, leading an ordinary life. He is a pious Christian, and he also knows about Chinese culture a lot.

To be honest, as a taxi driver, he is not rich, even leads a kind of poor life in such a rich city. He has to work about twelve hours every day, but he can hardly deposit money for later use. His son is good at schoolwork, however he cannot afford so high school fee in NUS that his son has to work for the government for six years to get the scholarship, just like we scholars.

However, he is not poor in his mind, he definitely knows a lot. From life to society, from religion to culture, during one hour and a half, we four learnt a lot. He also has some unique opinions for the Singapore government and society, some critics let me know that this society also has something to improve. Besides, living in such a safe and strict country, there are also disadvantages. For example, the young do not have the courage to risk, and it results in the lack of big business success. So in his opinion, Singapore is a good place to live in, especially after your retirement, but it is not a very suitable place to set up your career if you are ambitious. What an objective and good opinion! It is exactly what Singapore is like. So I admire him so much.

And he is a pious Christian, also a leader of a group of Christians. He prayers before each meal. He is so kind-hearted that pick up we four scholars even he is not rich.

Before meeting him, I hoped to have a very rich host family living in a big villa, so we can ask them to take us for a visit to Malaysia, or do something romantic. But after the meet, I complained why we were not set in a rich host family at the beginning? But after thinking it over, I really do not take it very serious, it does not matter as long as our host family is kind to us. I love our host family!
