We were invited to the Singapore Art Museum on 27th, April, 2011. The theme of the Art Museum recently is “negotiating home history and nation”.
The galleries inside are full of imagination. We can hardly know what exactly the artist wants to express with our limited imagination. However, I was shocked by some exhibits a lot. They were really scary. One of the exhibits was made by the skins of squirrels and the other one was made by the skins of snakes. These two exhibits were shaped like shirts. I think the skins are real but how cruel it is. I was puzzled and traumatized. Perhaps, that is the way for artists to make more attention to his works and we can have a deep impression therefore.
People may feel horrified when they see the shirt which was made by the skins of real squirrels. It is because in their point of view, squirrels are so lovely and cute and thus we should treasure them. On the other hand, the skins of snakes may make a difference. Consciously, people think snakes are beast and they can be dangerous or even fatal. Consequently, people may show less mercy to the death of the snakes. Compared with these two situations, I think that is what the artist wants to convey. All the animals are the same. Though some of them may fiercer than others and some of them are cute and adorable, they are all living things. If we can show our mercy to the squirrels, why cannot we show our mercy to all the man-made death of other animals? Moreover, I think the artist also wants our human beings to protect the living creatures from poaching and shows his anger to the animal skins trader.
