My visit to Singapore Art Museum

My visit to Singapore Art Museum

Last Wednesday we went the Singapore Art Museum. It was the art garden. In the gallery of new contemporary art acquisition from Southeast Asia, we saw the Java's machine. There were 15 life size figures, and it seemed as a band. The figure could play the drum automatically. Then I put the emphases on a small room. Its size was 250*250*250 cm. Its name was He is Satisfied from Monday to Friday and on Sunday He loves to Cry. It was made by Chun Kaifeng. He won the Singapore Art Exhibition Prize in 2009. It was a typical room for working and there were just two colors in the room: white and black. I think this room conveys an anxiety that most people who live in the urban societies can relate to. Chun subverts the original purpose of a diorama to one that is almost discomforting to the viewer. Then I went to the Learning Gallery. The gallery is dedicated to presenting artwork from SAM's collection to young visitors. The show there made me understand the artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia. It made me reflect on the function of these objects and the relation to other objects. I think the objects in the learning gallery are specially selected to encourage lively discussion and develop creative and analytical thinking. I learned a lot from this visit and there are not so many difference between the museum in Singapore and in China.
