We have been in Singapore for more than a month, and I want to share some of my felelings about the differences between China and Singapore.
First is the weather.I come from Liaoning Province which is located in the northeast of China. In winter,it can be rather cold, you have to put on a lot of clothes outside. But it is really warm inside the room, just opposite to the situation here. And in summer, the weather is hot and dry.In my piont of view,Singapore is much cooler, because of the heavy rain everyday.
Then comes the environment.Singapore is known as the flower city, and there are trees and flowers almost everywhere.Sometimes you may feel like being in a park or a large garden, but seeing the buildings, you will realise that you are in an international big city.It is impossible to find so many flowers in a city in China.
Another interesting thing is that ,in China, when you look at the map and think the destination is quite near,it can take you more than 20 minutes to get there. While, once in Singapore,I asked one Singaporean where was the MRT,he told me that was far away. Finally it turned out that we got there within 10 minutes.
In addition, the roads in china are always straight, and the buildings are always square or at least symnetric. However, even if you have a map,you can still get lost in the buildings in Singapore(the NUS campus is a best example).
Since things are quite different in so many ways from what I was used to,I think I will spend the whole 10 years getting to know the new culture and being part of it.
Rentong, you are sharp! And yes, indeed the differences in the two cultures and environments are quite huge!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are not overwhelmed by the differences between China and Singapore.
Make the most out of this learning experience and have an exciting and fulfilling ten years!
