Wonderful debate

Wonderful debate
At the beginning of our bridging course, I had already been informed that there would be an inter-class debate by the end. I was intrigued to know how an English debate is going to be. As I thought that debate itself is a very skillful and exciting competition even in Chinese. When I was in Nanjing University, I was one of the eight members in our faculty debate team. Now here in Singapore, I’m determined to have a try debating in English. Though I participated in the class-debate the previous week, I did not do well for my insufficient preparation. Luckily, I was trusted and encouraged by my classmates and got the chance to represent our class to compete against group 8. We tossed a coin to decide the proponent and opponent. We got the result to be opponents which was a bit more difficult for us. After eliminating several points of view, we confirmed our main point as celebrities are not automatic role models. However, we ran into difficulties in looking for the supporting ideas. Since not many statistics or examples can be found to take a stand, we began to complain about the unfairness of the motion. Nevertheless, Ms. Wong told us that a difficult topic could open up our mind and motivate us to learn more. With the help of teamwork, we finally got ready for our thesis and arguments. The night before the competition, each of us was in proper preparation for different jobs. We had our rehearsal and we five were all confident. The day finally came. We put on our formal suits to show the seriousness and our positive attitude. For most of us, it was the first time that we had the opportunity to dress so formal which made me especially excited. The competition proceeded well. I was the second speaker and soon it was my turn to speak. Our competitors got a little nervous, whereas, we turned out to be more calm and precise to state our standpoint. Just like my expectation, we won the debate successfully. In fact, the result is not so important by the end. what is more precious is the friendship we have harvested, the knowledge we have learned, and the importance of corporation and competition we have understood.
